The value of deep work

I miss my mornings. Before my ongoing medical journey began (kidney cancer diagnosis – March 2016), I usually got out of bed around 5 am and spent about ninety minutes sipping coffee and writing. I drafted blog posts, designed workshops, reflected on strategic progress, and other things. I loved the time – a clear mind, refreshed body, and quiet, uninterrupted time....


Marketing - a top priority

Let’s talk marketing. No matter how you define it, marketing exists in the intersection of the organization and its stakeholders (e.g., clients, volunteers, donors, funders, board, staff and more). In Marketing is Everything, Regis McKenna detailed that intersection as including our message and our look. It also includes how our people (staff, board, volunteers) behave, how we treat our clients, the content we produce, what our premises look like, and, most of all, the quality of our programs and services. That was 1991....


Report undermines nonprofit fundraising

Michigan’s Attorney General, Bill Schuette, recently released this year’s Professional Fundraising Charitable Solicitation Report. Once again, MLive reported on it (both online and in print). And, once again, it does little to provide consumer protection and does much to undermine our nonprofit community....
