Books truly have the power to transform, as well as to transport. I learned this truism early in life, and am convinced of the recreational and educational importance of public libraries to their communities. As a resident of this area for over forty years I know that we are particularly blessed by the services and programs of The Kalamazoo Public Library, named National Library of the Year 2002.

Since retiring in 2004 I have enjoyed serving on the FKPL Board and as a volunteer in the Friends bookstore. In the process, my appreciation of the library has deepened, and my life enriched, by the opportunity to work with so many dedicated volunteers, capable staff, and enthusiastic patrons. Everyone really seems to be enjoying themselves! Besides being fun, I think it’s also because we all really believe in what we are doing.

I earned a Ph.D. from Indiana University and taught music history and literature at Western Michigan University’s School of Music for almost 39 years before retiring Professor Emeritus of Music in 2004.
