Mary Buczkowski

Let me say first off that I love working as a volunteer at the Friends of Kalamazoo Public Library Bookstore. I have been volunteering for 12 years. I began at the library the year that I retired from teaching middle school at St. Augustine school. The hours are flexible and I couldn’t find a better group of “co-workers.” My husband, Ed, joins me on the days that the book store has its sales. He sorts and boxes books and helps things move along during the sale.

I grew up in Kalamazoo and always managed to find a library and felt comfortable around books. I belong to several book clubs now and since the book store handles requests for books, I’m able to find many books which are being discussed that month. In addition to being a volunteer at the book store, our other volunteers “jobs” include delivering Meals on Wheels each week, working at the St. Vincent DePaul store and singing in nursing homes. (The latter two, we volunteer for in Florida where we happily spend the winter months.)

For the past two years, I have been taking a water color class at the KIA and enjoying that very much; a lot to learn yet.
