Summer Reading Games Begin!

Everybody can sign up for Summer Reading Games to win prizes, have fun, and keep those reading skills sharp over the summer! There are so many new books and so much new content available electronically that you really could find something new every day of the summer. In addition to some great prizes you'll earn by reading 20, 40, and 60 days, you'll receive a bead (sticker for children birth to entering kindergarten) every time you visit any KPL location and check in with your Summer Reading Gamecard. How many beads will you collect this summer?

Here are some events to kick off Summer Reading Games at KPL!

Some of the events are special prize draw events which means you could be a winner - but you've got to come to the program to win.

You don't have to play Summer Reading Games to attend these programs, but why wouldn't you with all the great prizes you can earn. Sign up for Summer Reading Games beginning June 15!

Singalong Springtime

There are so many wonderfully fun stories about monsters that we had to have a singalong storytime all about them. We read Go Away Big Green Monster, Thelonius Monster's Sky-High Fly Pie, and considered the merits of The Monster at the End of this Book along with When a Monster is Born. Our very special guest was Mr. Steve who brought along Honey the Bear to sing along with Octy and all of us. Then we had a monster parade over to the craft tables and made big green monsters. Join us for our next Singalong Storytime on May 17 where we'll have more music games and singalong songs along with favorite stories, puppets, a special guest, and a craft.

Singalong Storytime

Stories, songs, puppets, movement, musical instruments, a special guest, and a special craft - it's Singalong Storytime! I hope you'll join us as we celebrate almost spring time with fun stories and a special craft about monsters (the fun kind, not the scary kind). This month's special guest is... a surprise! You'll have to come to find out who it is. We'll ask our special guest to sing along with us and Octy the Octopus who, as you know, speaks with musical notes, not with words as you and I do.

Join us for a fun almost-springtime evening of fun at the library!

Jim Gill Family Room Concert

What a great time was had by all when Jim Gill came to the Van Deusen Auditorium! Jim performed audience favorites while children and families clapped, danced, and sang along. When he presented his new picture book, A Soup Opera, the whole audience had the chance to be opera singers complete with sound effects and a musical score.

Jim Gill leaves people feeling like they attended something more than a concert. With wordplay and movement opportunities, Jim leads families in playing together with music and movement. He has a unique ability to get everyone in the room participating in songs and musical movement games.

Take a look at upcoming events for children and families at the KPL children's program calendar.

Sing Along Storytime

At Sing Along Storytime, we sang call-and-response songs, shared some great read aloud stories, and made crafts about the cow that jumped over the moon. We also met Octy the Musical Octopus (who speaks with musical notes) and Octy’s new friend Inky. Now Octy and Inky are off travelling to who-knows-where in their yellow suitcase. Inky promised to send a postcard, so check back here at the Kids’ Stuff blog for updates about their trip! Bon voyage, Octy and Inky!
Maybe Octy and Inky will be back from their big trip by the time we have our next evening Sing Along Storytime in May. Let us know your favorite sing along songs by replying to this blog post. Then, we can sing them together.

Books with a Bonus!

There are more and more great books with CDs or DVDs included. What a great idea! A picture book based on a song with a CD to sing along. A picture book with a DVD might have a short video or animated feature that enhances the book for you and your child to enjoy together. Non-fiction books with DVDs may include moving images such as archival footage. Or a book about visual art for children might have a CD of pictorial music. Don’t forget read along picture books – you know, the ones with page turn signals. These are better than ever in digital form. We’ve put black dots on these so you can find them more easily in the books with CDs/DVDs section of the Children’s Room.

Create Your Own Book Reviews!

Ever read a book, watch a movie, or listen to a recording you loved so much you want to tell everyone all about it? Now you can create your own book reviews for the Kalamazoo Public Library website!

And, if you want, you can record your review with your own voice. We'll post your book review on our website!

Love that book? Didn’t like it so much? Be Creative and tell the world all about it! It’s easy.

  1. Write a short review of a book you read. You can do it right from our website or come to your neighborhood KPL branch to write your review.
  2. Come to library and we’ll help you record the review you wrote. You need to have a parent sign a release form before we can put your voice on our website.

Listen to an example. You can write and record a review about anything you read and make it your own with your own voice. Have fun with Summer Reading Games this year!
