Brother Cadfael

I would not want to live in 12th century England, but I’ve enjoyed visiting it through the life and times of Brother Cadfael. A few years ago, PBS broadcast Brother Cadfael, a series of mysteries based on books by the late Edith Pargenter (who wrote under the name Ellis Peters). I enjoyed these programs so much that I began reading the books, too.

Played by Derek Jacobi, Brother Cadfael is a compassionate man of the world who turned to the monastery after fighting in the Crusades. In any given episode, the Welshman assumes the roles of detective, doctor and diplomat, all of which he manages well.

Rich in the history and customs of Wales and western England in the late 12th century, the stories are fun to read or watch on TV. KPL’s collection includes DVD, audio and books.

I love this series! It fairly transports you back to the time of the Crusades. There's something very familiar and empathetic in Derek Jacobi's portrayal of the good Brother. I have been somewhat addicted to shows lately, much to the chagrin of my boyfriend, who rolls his eyes and call me "M'lady".
I love this series too. I was so glad to see it on dvd...
