Drs. Gloria Larrieu, Kalamazoo Valley Community College English instructor, and Thomas Seiler, emeritus professor of English, Western Michigan University, will examine the formal, stylistic, and thematic connections between Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried and Mark Doty's Heavens Coast, books in which the authors wrestle with, respectively, the experience of war (Vietnam) and that of plague (the loss of a partner to AIDS).
