Meet Deogratias Niyizonkiza, the man who inspired Tracy Kidder’s book, Strength in What Remains! Deo first came to the United States during civil wars and genocide in both Rwanda and Burundi in 1994.
Now a U.S. citizen, Deo founded Village Health Works (VHW) on the principle that all humans have the right to quality, compassionate health care regardless of their sex or their ability to pay. VHW offers health care, nutrition, HIV, TB and malaria programs at a clinic in Kigutu, Burundi. The Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership at Kalamazoo College sponsors Deo’s visit to Kalamazoo.
