Ready to Read Blog

Tabby, Tiger, or Tuxedo?

My first placement as a Ready to Read Volunteer was in a Head Start classroom at Eastside Community Center this spring. I loved the experience and plan on being back at Ms. Janet’s class in the fall. One thing I learned is 2 to 5 year olds never get tired of Ed Emberley’s “Go Away, Big Green Monster!”

On the last day of school I was surprised when one of the children announced she wanted to read to me because she’d been particularly shy, rarely raising her voice above a whisper.

As children often do, she looked at a book and made up her own story. “Once there was a boy who wanted a cat,” she said in a very confident voice. As she turned the pages, I realized there was no cat in any illustration. Her entire tale was of a boy who wanted a cat but never got one. What a wonderful storyteller she was, making up a story about something not seen on any page!

My children loved this. They particularly enjoyed being able to shout out "Go away" on every page of the second half of the book as the monster built up in the first half disappears bit by bit. Lovely book!
My 3 year old also loves to make up her own stories. It is absolutely lovely when they imagination goes wild, never stops to awe me...

I think it is so wonderful that this blog encourages parents to start reading early to their children. Your story of the child who made up their own story and with characters not found in the book is inspiring.
Nice one as always, thank you.

It is too bad that we loose that imagination we had as children. Of all the things we have lost, nothing else was that wonderful.

I can't wait to see what the new "iPad tech" will bring in the form of children's ebooks.
http://www.mbtshoesaleonline.com One day, a father and his little son were going home. At this age, the boy was interested in all kinds of things and was always asking questions. Now, he asked, "What's the meaning of the word 'Drunk', dad?" "Well, my son," his father replied, "look, there are standing two policemen. If I regard the two policemen as four then I am drunk." "But, dad," the boy said, " there's only ONE policeman!" http://www.coach-handbags-outlet.com/ coach bags outlet
