Renovation FAQs

Frequently asked questions about the renovation process at Central Library.

1. Will the library be open during renovation?

Yes! All library services will be open as usual during normal operating hours. The renovation should have little or no impact on guest service.

2. What happened to the first floor help desk?

In preparation for the transition to the checkout kiosk and dismantling of the current circulation desk, the first floor desk service has been discontinued as of November 1st.

3. What is RFID?

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags are a kind of “new barcode,” which combines materials identification and security. These allow a stack of materials to be checked out all at one time, rather than one-by-one (saves time). This also allows us to implement a self checkout option for patrons who prefer the do-it-yourself route. (saves time AND alows us to provide provide better service to our patrons)

4. How can the library afford to do this?

A generous anonymous bequest allowed KPL to install a modern inventory system using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). With RFID, patrons can quickly and easily check out their own items. This change will help KPL more efficiently manage our evergrowing circulation - saving both time and money.
