I joined KPL on January 1, 1996, hired to fill a newly-created position to publicize and promote library programs and services.
At that time, Kalamazoo voters had just approved a millage that allowed the library to build, restore, renovate, or refurbish each of its five buildings. For my first two years, one of my major tasks was to produce opening celebrations!
As a voracious reader from a family of librarians, I feel very fortunate to be able to use my master’s degree in Organizational Communications to support such a wonderful library. KPL is a great employer; my work is varied, challenging and fulfilling. I love the environment—and the rainbows!
My husband and I moved here in 1974 to open New World Bicycles. We deliberately chose Kalamazoo based on census and market research (conducted in the library) and its proximity to our extended families in the Midwest. While the store has long since closed, we’re very happy with our adopted hometown. It’s been a wonderful place to raise our three boys.
We especially enjoy Kalamazoo’s rich musical and cultural life—I’ve sung with the Kalamazoo Bach Festival for 20 years—and Michigan’s natural resources. We’ve hiked, biked, skied, canoed, and camped across Michigan, and sailed all the Great Lakes. Our sailboat and summer refuge, Jubilate, harbors in South Haven.
