Cathy Serra

I first started working at Kalamazoo Public Library in 1998 as a shelver while attending Western Michigan University.  After a couple of years I moved into the local history department and aside from a year away doing volunteer service, I have been here ever since.  I have enjoyed my work so much that I returned to school and received my Masters in Library and Information Science from Wayne State University in 2007.

For three years now I have been handling genealogy and local history requests sent in to us from around the world.  Every day I look forward to seeing the latest questions that are waiting for me.  Will it be someone looking for information on the history of the Kalamazoo State Hospital or will they be looking for information on ancestors as they try to flesh out their family tree?  Either way, I look forward to the thrill of the hunt and the development of relationships with people I like to refer to as my “regulars.”  This past year I added the Children’s Room to my repertoire working both at the public desk and behind the scenes as an assistant to the head of Youth and Branch Services.
