International Games Day @ Your Library!

Wii598

There's less than 48 hours remaining until the annual holiday for all things game-related: International Games Day! Join us at Central Library on Saturday from 12 noon until 4 PM for more games than you can possibly imagine. We'll have all of our video game consoles set up and turned on, from the PS3 and Xbox 360 to the old dusty original NES that we dragged out of storage in your grandma's attic! We'll also have a truckload of board and card games, including old favorites like Monopoly and Risk to new amazing games like Betrayal at House on the Hill, Bang!, and of course- Munchkin! Represent KPL in the online Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament, and play against literally hundreds of other libraries around the world! We'll have random prize giveaways all afternoon and a ton of snacks to keep you energized, so don't miss it! If you can't make it to Central, don't worry- we'll have board games at the Oshtemo Branch as well! See you there...

Read-a-Thon THIS Saturday

Teens: grab your friends and head to the Central Library Saturday, October 20, 2012, from 10:00-4:00 for our annual Teen Read Week Read a Thon. Gather pledges for food donations for each hour you read (pledge sheets are available at the Central Library Teen Desk). Read for up to six hours with Teen Services staff. There will be pizza, free books, snacks and prizes throughout the day. Have your own GEEK photo taken starting at 3:00. Wear black for your photo! All food donations need to be delivered to the Teen Services Desk by Sunday, November 4 for delivery to Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes.

Read for the fun of it AND for the philanthropy of it.

And The Awards Go To...

The 9th Annual Teen Filmmaker Festival has come and gone, and it was one of the best Festivals ever! We had so many great films it was almost impossible for our judges to pick just one for each category. But in the end, only one film could win each award, and it's our pleasure to announce the winning films for 2012:

War Within by Jonathan D'Ambrosio - Best Film
Winter Wonderland by Morgan King - Judges' Choice
Through the Mirror by Griffin Snow - Peoples' Choice
The Charge of the Light Brigade by Matthew George - Best Animation
Mutual Slump by Samuel Peters - Best Experimental Film
Sling by Aaron Porter - Best Music Video
Plugged In by Anna Dodd - Best Short Film
The Mission by Kyle Misak - Best Technical Merit

Thanks again to every director who entered a film in this years' Festival, and congratulations to all of our winners. If you couldn't make it to the Festival, we'll be posting the complete lineup to our YouTube channel soon so you can catch up with everything you missed!

Teen Film Fest News and Previews!

We're gearing up for the Teen Filmmaker Festival on Sunday, and the anticipation is just killing us! If you can't wait, check out this Arts & More preview from WMUK. There's a great article about the Festival, a preview by film critic James Sanford, and a look at the making of Becky Burgen's entry Be You

Tickets for the Festival will be available on Sunday at the Rave, starting at 11 AM when the theater opens. There's no cost for admission, but make sure you get there early because the Festival was standing-room only last year!

LOOK OUT! (Submit Your Films)

So there we were just hanging around in the Teen Area today, minding our own business, when out of nowhere this happened:

Too bad you weren't there... you could have filmed it and entered it into the Teen Filmmaker Festival! Good thing there's still FIVE MORE DAYS to submit your own films...

Make Your Way Downtown

OK …you’re back to school and your break is over. Now it’s time to focus on all the winter fun that is ahead! Where you say? At the KPL Teen Services of course! Come on down and see our, I mean, YOUR new space. It is colorful and bright with twelve windows and even a door!

Some of you got the memo, it was on and popping in Teens this afternoon. If you haven’t been down to check us out then “make your way downtown” to the library.
