News, events, and happenings... for Tweens!
Summer Reading Games are just around the corner. On your way home from the last day of school on June 15th, don't forget to stop at your favorite KPL branch library to sign up for Summer Reading Games. When you get your gameboard/calendar, take a look for great events coming up in those last two weeks of June. Some of the events are special prize draw events which means you could be a winner - but you've got to come to the program to win.
Here are some events to kick off Summer Reading Games at KPL!
You don't have to play Summer Reading Games to attend these programs, but why wouldn't you with all the great prizes you can earn. Sign up for Summer Reading Games beginning June 15!
Are We There Yet?
Coming up on Tuesday, May 24th, at 6:30 pm is a special interactive drawing workshop about how to stand up for others. Illustrator Kim Shaw bases a unique art program on her book, The Juice Box Bully, written by Bob Sornson and Maria Dismondy. Kim's program features a book reading, time for questions and answers, and an interactive drawing workshp, all designed to empower kids to stand up for others. This program is best for children ages 5 - 11 years old, caregivers and teachers.
Anti Bullying Art Workshop
Yo Ho Holiday Pirates will invade KPL's Central Library on Wednesday, December 29th! Consider yourself warned. Lucky for us that Aerial Angels, Kalamazoo's own high-flying female circus artists will be on hand to rescue the holidays from these dastardly doers. Come to the Central Library for a special holiday show with the Aerial Angels!
Pirates Invade the Library?
The Ugly Truth is that Wimpy Kid is back with a new book. Guess what. The library is throwing a party about it. Believe it. Plus there are lots of other fun things to do at your library. From Bingo to Gaming to Movies to just being somewhere that is, for all practical purposes an infinite space, may you find what you need at the library.

Make Waves with Your Own Reviews
You've gotta admit it's nice weather for humans (compared, for instance, to sideways blowing hail). And if it gets too hot, liquid water will cool you down. Go Outside and Play at the Oshtemo Branch Library. Have some cool fun in the sun. Make a splash with a variety of water activities. Crafts, games, snacks, and fun! Tweensonly.
Go Outside and Play
Welcome back to summer! It's time to cool off with a movie and popcorn. Catch our first Movie Monday with Fantastic Mr. Fox. The classic Roald Dahl book is eighty one pages of goodness. The Wes Anderson film based on the book expands the premise while retaining the feel of the story. Sign up for Summer Reading Games.
Foxy, I Love You
"I think the performances were really inspired. All the performers were lip syncing but you couldn't tell...much. And isn't that what lip syncing is all about?" - Not Ellen DeGeneres
We don't have Ellen DeGeneres as a celebrity judge on Puppet Idol, but we did have some amazing performances by some amazing puppets. Music included songs by Lady GaGa, Black Eyed Peas, Flaming Lips, Gorillaz, Gloria Gaynor, Cyndi Lauper, Jimmy Durante, the Muppets, Louis Armstrong, and Julie Andrews (who is very not Lady GaGa).
Puppets! To the Green Room!
OK, imagine this puppet singing "Dancing with Myself" the Billy Idol song that Artie sings in season one of Glee.
You pick the puppet. And the song.
Then you make your puppet sing and dance and lipsync to the song of your choice.
So funny to watch. So fun to do.
Register... We’ll have the puppets and the music.
All that’s missing is you.
