I am the banjo player for Who Hit John?, a five piece old time string band here in Kalamazoo. Three years ago, I hadn’t even touched a banjo. I bought a cheap open back Rouge online and immediately went to the library to look for help figuring this weird contraption out. I checked out Pete Seeger’s “How to Play the 5-String Banjo” and I was off. After that I checked out several instructional bluegrass videos and used the library’s computers to watch countless hours of clawhammer banjo videos on YouTube. It's safe to say that other than a handful of invaluable lessons from local folk guru Joel Mabus and many hours of jamming with my peers, I got all the musical tools I have from the Kalamazoo Public Library.
On April 29th Who Hit John? had the honor of playing at KPL. Starting as a novice, open mic singer/songwriter and ending as a part of a series that has featured the likes of Steppin’ In It, The Red Sea Pedestrians and Shout Sister Shout is humbling. Thank you for having us.
