Marguerite Baechtold knows libraries. She taught library science at Western Michigan University for many years. Today, she’s a volunteer librarian and heads the library committee at Friendship Village where she lives and continues to read. When she says, “We brag on KPL all the time,” it’s high praise. Although the Friendship Village library is independent, it is KPL’s benefactor in many ways. An entire stack holds dozens of books on loan. Frequent rotation ensures that residents always have access to the latest releases. Marguerite says, “It gets a lot of traffic.”

The library also makes KPL’s outreach service available by providing easy access to the books-by-mail program that allows residents to request a particular book by phone, receive it by mail and return it in a labeled shipping envelope. And every month or so, a caravan of Village residents visits the Oshtemo branch for books and coffee.
