It is just possible that the Overbeek children developed their love for community through the Kalamazoo Public Library. College freshmen, twins Benjamin and Craig Overbeek have both chosen careers in community service. Benjamin attends Western Michigan University on a Medallion Scholarship, preparing for elementary education. Craig, at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, is working toward a career in law enforcement.
As she home schooled the boys for most of their K-12 education, mom Michelle relied on the Central Library to augment their curriculum with information and resources. “I wheeled them into storytime in umbrella strollers,” Michelle says. “When they were older we rode our bikes to the library. Both boys really bonded with Miss Ann. Benjamin still says Curious George is his favorite book.”
