Moving to a new community is challenging at any age. But the world of Amos Mechtenberg-Berrigan, just 2 ½-years old when his family arrived in Kalamazoo, was about to be rocked again — mother Molly was pregnant with his brother, Jonah. “I immediately started to take Amos to storytime to help him adjust to a new city, a new neighborhood and to get him out around other kids,” Molly says of the Eastwood Branch Library near their home.
Not only did she find a constructive and engaging outlet for the young boy, he developed a love of books in the process. “He’s in preschool now and he loves stories,” Molly says. “My husband, Jerry Berrigan, and I are reading him the Little House on the Prairie series and he sits and listens, even to longer books like those.” Amos is also preparing for kindergarten with books on tape — borrowed from the library, of course.
