Your Story: Robert Barnard

“Having access to that depth of information is really valuable”

The back-yard mechanic isn’t gone, says Robert Barnard, Kalamazoo County Commissioner and owner of Barnard Building and Construction. But if you haven’t seen him (or her) around lately, check the library. “I spend a lot of time under the hood of cars,” says Barnard. “When I run across a problem that requires more support than what I’m familiar with, I use Mitchell’s or Chilton’s OEM repair manuals from the Reference department.” Chilton and Mitchell are popular service books among auto shops, but single books are pricey and not always available to home mechanics. Barnard, who likes to work on family and friends’ cars along with his own, says a set would be cost prohibitive. “Having access to that depth of information is really valuable for me,” Barnard says. “I can find everything from wiring diagnostic s to comprehensive engine and transmission details.  And I can use it free of charge.”
